Cincinnati Style Turkey Sloppy Joes

Ingredients

  1. 1 T extra virgin olive oil
  2. 1 small white onion, finely chopped, divided
  3. 1 lb ground turkey
  4. 1 T chili powder
  5. 1/4 t apple pie spice or ground cinnamon
  6. Kosher salt
  7. freshly ground pepper
  8. 1/2 c chili sauce (such as Heinz)
  9. 1 T Worcestershire sauce
  10. 4 soft hamburger buns, lightly toasted
  11. 1 c sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat the olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat.
  2. Add all but 1/4 cup onion; cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
  3. Stir in the turkey, chili powder, pie spice, a big pinch of salt and a few grinds of pepper.
  4. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat, until the turkey is well browned, 4 to 5 minutes.
  5. Add the chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce and 1/2 cup water; stir to combine.
  6. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer, stirring frequently, until the turkey is fully cooked and the sauce is thickened slightly, 3 to 5 minutes.
  7. Divide the turkey mixture among the bun bottoms.
  8. Sprinkle with the cheese, reserved chopped onion and the bun tops.
