Grilled Chicken Drumsticks with Cherry BBQ Sauce

    You can also use chicken breasts as well!


  1. 3 cups fresh or frozen sour cherries, pitted and thawed (about 20 oz.)
  2. 1/4 c water
  3. 2 T sugar
  4. 1/3 c honey
  5. 1/3 c ketchup
  6. 1/4 c tomato paste
  7. 1/4 c unseasoned rice vinegar
  8. 3 T bourbon, optional
  9. 1 1/2 t kosher salt
  10. 1 t black pepper
  11. 1 t onion powder
  12. 1/2 t dry mustard
  13. 1/8 t ground red pepper
  14. 4 lbs chicken drumsticks, skinned (about 16)
  15. Cooking spray


    BBQ Sauce

  1. Place cherries in a food processor; pulse until almost smooth.
  2. Bring cherry puree, 1/4 cup water, and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high.
  3. Reduce heat to low; simmer 20 minutes.
  4. Strain mixture through a fine-mesh sieve over a bowl to yield about 1 cup liquid; discard remaining solids.
  5. Add cherry liquid to pan; bring to a boil.
  6. Stir in honey, ketchup, tomato paste, rice vinegar, bourbon, if using, salt, pepper, onion powder, dry mustard, and red pepper.
  7. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook 10 minutes or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally.
  8. Cool sauce.
  9. Place 1 cup sauce in a bowl; reserve.
  10. Chicken

  11. Preheat grill to medium-high (about 450°F).
  12. Coat grill grate and drumsticks with cooking spray.
  13. Arrange drumsticks on grill; cover and cook 8 minutes, turning occasionally.
  14. Reduce heat to medium.
  15. Brush drumsticks with remaining sauce; cook 12 minutes or until done, turning and brushing every 3 minutes.
  16. Serve with reserved 1 cup sauce.
