Orange Salad with Red Wine Syrup and Mint

    If you make the syrup in advance and it becomes to thick, you can loosen it up by adding a small amount of warm water.


  1. 1 c red wine
  2. 1/3 c sugar
  3. 6 whole cloves
  4. 6 allspice berries
  5. 1 cinnamon stick
  6. 1 star anise
  7. 6 oranges
  8. 2 T torn fresh mint


  1. In skillet, bring wine, sugar, cloves, allspice berries, cinnamon, and star anise, to a boil over high heat, stirring occasionally.
  2. Reduce heat to medium.
  3. Simmer wine mixture until syrupy, about 10 minutes.
  4. Strain syrup; let cool.
  5. Cut peel and white pith from oranges.
  6. Slice oranges into rounds; arrange on platter.
  7. Drizzle with syrup.
  8. Garnish with mint.
