Pre-Notes

This is the original recipe from the Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt Hotel, in New Orleans.

This recipe can easily be customized, you can add a dash of Angostura Bitters, or a little extra Absinthe, if you like the taste. Also, try making the drink in a shaker. Do Watcha Wanna!

Ingredients

  1. 1 sugar cube or 1/4 oz simple syrup
  2. 3 dashes Peychaud's Bitters
  3. 1 1/2 oz rye whiskey
  4. 1/4 oz Absinthe (Herbsaint)
  5. ice
  6. lemon peel

Instructions

  1. Pack an Old-Fashioned glass with ice.
  2. In a second Old-Fashioned glass place a sugar cube and add bitters to it, then crush the sugar cube.
  3. Add the rye whiskey to the bitters and sugar.
  4. Empty the ice from the first glass, and coat the glass with the Absinthe, then discard the remaining Absinthe.
  5. Empty the whiskey mixture from the second glass into the first glass.
  6. Squeeze the lemon peel over the mixture to put some of the oils on the surface of the liquid.
  7. Rub the lemon peel around the rim of the glass and then drop the lemon peel into the drink.
